RANTES stands for Regulated upon Activation Normal T-cell expressed and secreted chemokine. However, it is secreted by most cell types, not just T-cells. It is chemotatic for T-cells, monocyte lineages, eosinophils, and basophils. RANTES expression in cell lines is heavliy upregulated during viral infection. Activation may be associated with the innate interferon response.
