C-reactive protein (CRP)

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein that is dramatically elevated upon infection, tissue damage, or other types of inflammation. Its utility in diagnostics has been debated as it will rise under numerous circumstances, but in a controlled environment, like a research study, this protein can be a great indicator of stress. Cytokines such as IL-1 and IL-6 can induce CRP expression in vivo.
