Erythropoietin (EPO)

EPO is the primary regulator of reythropoiesis. This cytokine, synthesized by the kidneys stimuates immature erythrocyte proliferation and differentiation; it also stimulates the growth of erythoid progenitor cells. As such, patients suffereing from kideny failure induced anemia are given Epo, which restores this cytokine to the bodry resulting in a rapid increase in red blood cell count.
